One-ish day Project: DIY Fireplace Shelves

Hooray, we have shelves!! This is by far my favorite diy project around the house to date! Here is the before:

Pretty blah, huh? The tile around the fireplace is lovely though!

First we tried the thick post-type wood. It was a no-go. We found it too heavy for the brackets we used. Plus, the brackets, even after painting, were too obvious on our light green walls.

Next, we tried pine wood boards. Perfect!

And here they are currently, minus decoration, as that is a work in progress (with and without lighting):

Awesome, no? These are floating shelves, built by my husband and stained/sealed by yours truly 🙂 Hubby really went above and beyond with the lighting. Perks of marrying an electrician, I suppose. To get an idea of what it takes to do this stuff, see below:

As you can see, there were lots of holes in walls. And wires left and right. And that tv was HEAVY!

I absolutely recommend the floating shelves project to anyone with mid-level experience with DIY-ing around the home.
